Tuesday Tips and Tools - Formal table setting
Ever go to a restaurant and see more silverware and plates than you know what to do with? Ever wonder what fork was for what? If you did, pay attention.
For a formal multiple course meal there are different dishes and utensils for each course. Why wouldn’t there be, they hire people to do the dishes! Utensils are usually placed on the table in the order of the courses, starting from the outside for the earliest courser. The basic three utensils are positioned as usual, and would be placed furthest in and next to the plate - dinner fork to the left , dinner knife and spoon to the right.
So, a soup spoon would go outside to the right of the dinner spoon. The soup bowl would go above the dinner plate to the right. A bread plate would then go to the left of the dinner plate just above the fork. A butter knife would be placed diagonally on the bread plate. A salad fork would go outside to the left of the dinner fork. Salad plates go to the left below the bread plate. The salad fork foes to the outside of the dinner fork on the left. Dessert spoons go just above the dinner plate with the handle facing to the right.
See, it’s pretty easy. If you’re out and still can’t remember and worry about these things, just remember this. When in doubt, start out.
